Casino gambling raises its head in Arkansas again

Arkansans don't mind betting on fast horses. They don't seem to have a problem making wagers on fast dogs. When it comes to casinos, however, they draw the line.

Arkansas voters repeatedly have drawn the line on attempts to legalize casino gambling, most recently in 2000. This November, if proponents get the necessary 80,570 signatures on their petition, voters may get to have their say again, this time on a proposal similar to the one that went down in flames six years ago.

I do NOT understand this! We lived in Arkansas for three years (Marine Corps choice, not ours). We lived up in north central Arkansas and were about 30 minutes from Missouri. So, we drove up there regularly to get lottery tickets. How can Arkansas say betting on horses and dogs is okay, but "real" gambling isn't? And I bet there are scads of people who have forsaken the dog track in West Memphis to make the 30 - 45 minute trip to Tunica.

When is Arkansas going to wake up and admit that they are losing money by their own people going to other states to gamble? But then, we lived in a dry county - I didn't even know those existed anymore! Missouri was our answer to that problem as well :-)

That sound similiar to Virginia. We have lottery, horse track and para mutual betting parlars.....but gambling is bad!

Go figure.

Yeah, what is up with that? Gambling is bad, so that is going to prevent Arkansans from going to Missouri or Mississippi for the casinos or Tennessee for the lottery? I think not!
