Casino prepares for national event
01/23/2007

VERONA - The Oneida Indian Nation will host a national sporting event this February as the World PowerSports Association brings its Eastern National SnoCross Race and Expo to Turning Stone Resort and Casino.

Pro and amateur riders from across the country will convene at the resort for two days of competition on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 10 and 11.

"A successful run this year could mean a permanent place on the association's regular circuit and possibly include future regional snowmobile events. We're trying to create a regional all-season destination resort by hosting these events," said Clint Hill of the Oneida Nation's Men's Council.

P.J. George, who assisted in bringing the event to Turning Stone, agreed, noting that "in addition to hosting a PGA Tour event over the next six years, we will now have one of the biggest snow events in the country right here in Verona, New York."

The event, with activities scheduled near the Golf Driving Range and in the Event Center, is open to the public. Fans purchasing tickets in advance, available on the snowmobile tour page at http://www.powersportstour.com, will receive a complimentary pit pass. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.

Prices are $20 for Saturday, $25 for Sunday, or $40 for a weekend pass. Tickets for children ages 6 to 15 are $5 each day or $10 for the weekend, while children 5 and under are admitted free.

Those wishing to ride their sleds to the event may park at the Villages at Turning Stone RV Park on Route 365, where shuttles will be available to take fans and spectators to the competition.

Snocross racing is noted for its high-flying aerial displays and tracks featuring tight turns, banked corners, and bumps that allow racers to "catch air," delighting spectators and television viewers. The event will be televised on SPEED at 2 p.m. on Feb. 24.

The WPSA manages, promotes, and regulates a variety of snowmobile competitions. The organization was formed to help racers, manufacturers and sponsors benefit from the professional sport of snowmobile racing.
