An exclusive golf and hunt club now under construction will reward high-level players at Diamond Jo Casino, Casino General Manager Jesus Aviles said Wednesday.

Pheasant Links golf and hunt club will be located on the site of the former Arrowhead golf course at Emmons, Minn., Aviles said, following a talk at the Mason City Noon Lions Club.

It is being built by Peninsula Gaming, parent company of the casino. Membership will be by invitation.

“You can’t golf in winter,” Aviles said. “In the winter months, you’ll be able to hunt.”

Some months, hunting, clay pigeon shooting and golfing on a nine-hole course will be offered concurrently. The activities will be coordinated so as not to interfere with one another, Aviles said.

“I think it (the concept) is unique,” he said.

In addition to the existing golf course, Peninsula Gaming has purchased 300 additional acres to expand the club area.

A wildlife habitat, with several small ponds and a wetland, is being created. Hunting guides and hunting dogs will be available.

The dogs will be raised in kennels at Pheasant Links.

The clubhouse also is being remodeled, Aviles said.

Pheasant Links should be ready for hunting later this month.

Golfing will have to wait until next spring or summer.

Earlier Wednesday, Aviles told Lions Club members the casino has surpassed all expectations for earnings and traffic.

Initial projections were for earnings of $30 million the first year and 600,000 people, he said. “We are going to far surpass that.”

With traffic of 335,000 people in the first three months, Aviles said revenues for the year will probably exceed $60 million.

The Worth County Development Association will probably receive $3.5 million this year, half of which will go to scholarships for Worth County students and half to grants for county projects.

“We’re at a point now where we can do something for the community,” Aviles said.

Statewide, the gaming industry employs 10,000 people, provides $302 million in wages and pays $301 million in taxes, Aviles said.

Calling gaming “the highest-regulated industry in the nation,” he said, “The days when the gaming industry was undesirable are kind of something of the past.

“The casino is run like a Fortune 500 company. The only difference is, we offer entertainment.”
