CANAL FULTON City Council members were both bewildered and dismayed about a telephone survey being conducted by Discovery Research Group about casinos.

Council members were bewildered because none knew anything about the survey. City Manager Mark Cozy said the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma contacted him July 26 about the survey and he informed Mayor John Grogan.

Cozy said he told the tribe representative that he was concerned that residents did not have all the information about the casino. Grogan said the tribe was paying for the survey.

Council and other city officials were dismayed by the information the survey takers were telling residents and the questions they were asking.

City resident Katherine Dean told council she had received a call on Saturday. She said she was told the pros and cons of the casino issue, that there was a revenue-sharing agreement with the city and was asked to rate the area ministers on their involvement in the issue. Other residents said they received similar calls but not all of the questions were the same.

Grogan and several council members flatly denied any revenue-sharing agreement with the tribe and asked City Law Director Dale Kincaid to request copies from Discovery Research Group of all survey questions. Grogan also suggested issuing a statement that the survey results may not be accurate once they are compiled. Kincaid recommended that the statement be delayed until the results are published.

Karen Nelson of 6301 Chiltern Rd. NW in Lawrence Township was concerned that the survey was biased and added that she was asked questions about her church attendance, recent bingo playing, school support and political party affiliation.

The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma is buying land at Arcadia Street NW and Route 21. The Shawnee had tried unsuccessfully to get the support of both Massillon and Canal Fulton city councils for a proposed family destination recreational area that would include a water park, restaurants, retail shops, an amphitheater and a casino. The Shawnee have instead chosen to deal with a private landowner.
