Casino to launch recruiting campaign
Job fair next week kicks off an effort to fill 1,000 new jobs

Potawatomi Bingo Casino will stage a job fair next week to interview applicants for what are expected to be 1,000 new jobs at the Milwaukee gambling hall.

The hiring, which would increase employment at the Menomonee Valley casino to about 3,000, is connected to a $240 million expansion now under way.

Available jobs range from dishwashers and housekeepers to experienced dealers. Most are full-time positions, spokesman Ryan Amundson said.

He declined to say what the pay ranges would be.

The job fair, scheduled for June 27 in Racine, is the first the casino has held, Amundson said. He said it is planning on other job fairs as well.

The Forest County Potawatomi broke ground on the expansion last August. The project will double the number of slot machines to more than 3,100 and more than double the number of table games. The casino now has more than 40 table games, Amundson said.

Expansion of the casino itself is expected to be finished in late summer or early fall of next year, Amundson said. He said a new, six-story parking structure should be completed by late November.

On Friday, the casino will open a new bridge connecting the existing parking structure with the James E. Groppi Unity Bridge. That will give patrons direct access to the casino from what formerly was known as the 16th Street Viaduct.

Next week's job fair will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Racine Marriott, 7111 Washington Ave. (Highway 20), Racine.

A financial projection done for the Potawatomi tribe said the expansion could significantly increase the casino's revenue to as much as $570 million a year.

Paving the way for the expansion were July 2006 Wisconsin Supreme Court decisions. Those rulings declared the early-1990s casino compacts with the state's 11 tribes constitutional and upheld the additional games added in 2003.
