The Lone Butte Casino is moving to a new location in the same Gila River Indian Community business park south of the Santan Freeway near Kyrene Road, solving a potential conflict with south Chandler neighborhoods.

Gila spokeswoman Alia Maisonet confirmed the Community Council made the decision in closed sessions Friday, voting on the new location south of west Chandler and against a controversial spot near Gilbert Road and Hunt Highway that was far from major transportation corridors and close to neighborhoods and schools.

"We're so happy," said Ursula Johnston, whose home would have been close to the Gilbert Road site. "And we are grateful that the Gila River Indian Community leaders took our views into consideration and allowed us to voice our concerns."

Plans for the new 120,000-square-foot, $60 million casino include up to 750 slot machines, a 750-seat bingo hall, two restaurants, and food court, according to a prepared statement from the Casino Expansion Owner's Team. It is expected to open in late 2008.

The current Lone Butte casino has 450 slot machines.

"I commend the community for the decision," said Mayor Boyd Dunn. "The site at Gilbert Road and Hunt Highway had problems. It was incompatible with neighborhoods and transportation issues created enormous concern," he said.

Dunn said he is "cautiously optimistic" about the new location and is hopeful it will improve the industrial park area. "I am also pleased with the new attitude of working together on any development along our borders," Dunn said.

Lone Butte needs a new location because the Gila community is planning to move its larger Wild Horse Pass casino closer to Interstate 10 and state rules require casinos to be at least a mile and a half apart.
