Casino workers seek unionization
A provincial labour board hearing that’s to start Tuesday in Halifax will cover the potential unionization of Casino Nova Scotia workers, a release said Friday.
Employees at the Halifax waterfront casino voted on unionizing in May and June, said the release from the Service Employees International Union.
The union, which wants to represent the casino’s nearly 600 employees, has been conducting a membership drive since mid-February. It aims to represent such workers as card dealers, slot machine attendants and security personnel.
Casino Nova Scotia is owned by a British Columbia firm, Great Canadian Gaming Corp. The Nova Scotia Labour Relations Board is to conduct a hearing on the union-recognition issue from Sept. 4 to 7.
Ballot boxes containing the workers’ votes have remained sealed pending the board’s hearing, the release said. |
