Casinos Deny Targeting Teens for Gambling
6 March 2006

CONNECTICUT ?€“ As reported by the Norwich Bulletin: "You'd be hard pressed to find a local teen who hasn't visited one of the casinos.

"Teens say they consider Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun like big malls.

"?€¦Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun have activities for children and teens as part of their efforts to be resort destinations. They offer arcades and recreation areas for children and many concerts appeal to teens.

"But they walk a fine line to make sure they aren't too attractive to patrons younger than 21.

"Some gambling experts believe exposure to the casinos through non-gambling venues could lead to problems for teens when they're older.

"?€¦Underage persons are not allowed on the gaming floors. Both casinos pushed to get a 2003 state law passed to help enforce that prohibition. Minors caught on the gaming floor are now subject to fines of $100 to $500 and 30 days in jail.

"?€¦ 'We're not into the teen market,' said Tom Cantone, vice president of marketing and entertainment at Foxwoods.

"?€¦Steinberg said he has worked with Foxwoods and agrees they are working toward older demographics. And Dennis Conrad, president and chief strategist for Raving Consulting in Reno, Nev., said casinos would be crazy to market to teens?€¦"
