Casinos develop own ideas to curb smoking
While state Senate lawmakers consider a bill that would extend to casinos the statewide ban on workplace smoking, Atlantic City gaming halls are weighing voluntary plans that would set aside non-gaming smoking sections and make the rest of the casino completely smoke-free.
Fred Buro, president and CEO of Tropicana Casino and Resort, said Monday his casino is drafting an plan that would create fully enclosed, non-gaming, unstaffed smoker lounges on or near the casino floor
“They would be virtually free of employees. It would be a place, maybe on the casino floor but without any gaming, where smokers could go and relax,” Buro said. “When it comes time to clean these lounges, they would be emptied out.”
Buro said he — and other Atlantic City casinos executives — are looking for practical ways to accommodate both smokers and non-smokers, as well as adhere to whatever state or local regulations are in effect.
On Monday, the Senate Health Committee unanimously passed a measure that that would change to the bill that exempted casinos from the larger statewide ban on workplace smoking. The bill now goes to the full Senate. |
