Ceiling cave-in halts casino's construction

A Pompano Beach casino under construction lost 10,000 square feet of its ceiling when the drywall collapsed Friday morning.

Nobody was hurt, but the cave-in will bring work to a halt until at least Monday, fire officials said.

Hundreds of people were working on Pompano Park's $150 million casino about 10:45 a.m. when the 200-by-50-foot section of ceiling fell, said Sandra King, spokeswoman for Pompano Beach Fire-Rescue. According to the 911 call, workers there thought people were trapped in the rubble.

"Had an accident, inside the building, it's a structural collapse, we need some people here right now," a man emphatically told a 911 dispatcher. "There's a big pile down here, we can't see under it. We know there's people down there."

When firefighters arrived, they had to use thermal imagers to search for victims. They found no one.

Firefighters and paramedics said anyone unlucky enough to be trapped beneath the rubble "would have been injured or worse," King said.

The city cut power to the building and shut down all construction until electrical and construction engineers, along with federal workplace safety inspectors, determine the site is safe. King said that construction could begin as soon as Monday if the site meets the inspectors' standards.

"We just want to make sure the structure is safe before we allow anyone back in," King said.

Doug Shipley, corporate vice president of racino operations at Pompano Park, said he expected construction to start soon enough to meet the park's March opening goal. The casino will have several upscale restaurants and 1,500 Las Vegas-style slots.

"Every minute's important," Shipley said. "But I don't see that delaying our opening at this stage."
