LAKEWOOD — The Colorado Gaming Commission levied a $100,000 fine against Central City’s new Century Casino, citing problems with its accounting procedures and other administrative issues.
The casino opened in July and is operated by publicly traded Colorado Springs-based Century Casinos Inc.
"We had concerns about how the casino’s business was being conducted," Gaming Division Director Ron Kammerzell told the regulatory panel at its public meeting here.
Kammerzell said the casino’s problems did not affect patrons, but violated gaming regulations nonetheless.
The casino had difficulty producing required statistical reports, among other shortcomings.
"There’s been an inability to verify" the casino’s reported adjusted gross proceeds, or the amount of revenue minus payouts, for the months of July through September, said Assistant Attorney General Ceri Williams, who presented the disciplinary case to the commissioners.
The gaming panel also voted to levy a $1,000 fine against the casino’s former general manager William Aker. Aker has since left his post at the casino, largely as result of its inability to comply with state gaming regulations, according to Larry Hannappel, senior of Century Casinos Inc.
"We’re correcting the problems," Hannappel said after the meeting. He blamed staff turnover and difficulty in finding experience casino managers for the rocky start at the new gaming establishment.
The gaming commission also fined nine other casinos for operating a varying number of slot machines with software that should have been replaced by a certain date in the past couple of years.
The biggest fine went to Golden Gulch Casino, which had 19 slot machines with revoked software. It must pay $8,500 and agree to check all its software and bring it up to date.
The software issue is largely an administrative one and has no bearing on customers who play the slots, according to Kammerzell, the gaming division director.
Other casinos that were fined include:
Bronco Billy’s Sport Bar & Casino, $1,200; Red Dolly Casino, $1,500; Creeker’s Casino, $500; Easy Street Casino, $250; Famous Bonanza, $250; Century Casinos Cripple Creek, $2,000; Silver Hawk Casino, $7,000; Bull Durham Saloon & Casino, $1,000.
