Chandler residents oppose tribe’s nearby casino

Chandler residents are organizing opposition to the Gila River Indian Community’s plans to build a casino south of their city.

Chandler Mayor Boyd Dunn said he learned about the tribe’s plans to build a 120,000-square-foot, $60 million casino just south of some city neighborhoods last month, a few weeks after he said the tribe told him it wanted to keep the area agricultural.

Maricopa County Supervisor Fulton Brock called the decision to move the casino into a predominantly residential area so far from a freeway puzzling.” The closest road is the two-lane Hunt Highway.
