CHEROKEE – Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and Hotel increased its payouts to tribal members by $18 million last year and attracted an additional 200,000 visitors, according to the company’s annual report this week.

The increase in profits comes as the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians plans add 1,000 jobs at the casino, already the largest private employer west of Asheville and one of North Carolina’s top tourism attractions.

The expansion could be completed by 2010. The plan calls for doubling the size of the casino, building a third hotel tower larger than each of the current two towers and adding a spa and restaurant, two more parking decks and retail space. The tribe wants to create a resort-style operation that will offer more amenities to the casino's growing customer base.

The casino produces a Community Report each year that shows its payouts to tribe’s 13,717 members in the form of twice-annual per-capita checks. The report also shows how the casino benefits the economy and the amount it has given to nonprofits and charities.

Harrah’s employs 1,873 people in Cherokee and made $280 million last year. It gave $244,319 to local charities.

“This year’s community report demonstrates the value of strong partnerships between businesses, communities and local government to the continued growth and health of our region,” said casino General Manager Darold Londo on Tuesday. “Over the next five years the expansion we will be experiencing will offer many more op for us to work together.”

In 2006, 3.6 million people visited the casino, according to the report. The casino had a payroll of $68 million and spent $12 million with vendors in North Carolina for goods and services.

Most of that money was spent on the Qualla Boundary.
