Choctaw plan for coast casino faces hurdles for approval
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians' plan to build a casino in Jackson County, Mississippi, isn't quite as simple as a roll of the dice.
Winning federal, state and local support for a casino resort may be the tribe's biggest gamble yet.
Tribal Chief Phillip Martin told Jackson County supervisors earlier this month that the five-step federal process that would allow Indian gaming is long and arduous.
And there's no guarantee of approval.
The Choctaws also have to convince the governor to allow a casino.
Haley Barbour has balked at their proposal, saying he opposes expansion of gaming beyond the counties where casinos already are located.
And, the tribe has requested the support of Jackson County voters, who have overwhelmingly rejected gaming in the past.
Jackson County, which borders Alabama, is the only one of Mississippi's three coastal counties without casinos. |
