A hundred and sixty senior citizens have launched a nationwide campaign to root out gambling.

The members of the National Council for Upgrading Korea held a press conference yesterday at the New Kukje Hotel in Seoul proclaiming a war against gambling, criticizing the current situation where Korea is being labeled as a ``Gambling Republic’’ instead of ``a developed country.’’

It has decided to create a citizens’ group with other civil organizations, help gambling addicts and launch a nationwide campaign to eradicate the addictive habit.

``This addictive and harmful gambling devastates people’s lives just as drugs or prostitution does,’’ said Kim Tae-kil, director of the National Academy of Services. He said that these things are not easy to cut off by oneself, but are possible with the help of the society. Therefore, he added, there needs to be a nationwide decision to get rid of this addictive entertainment from its roots.

Kim, along with 159 others including Song Wal-joo, a former executive chief of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order; Park Young-shik, former president of Yonsei Universty and Soh Kyung-suk, the representative of a Christian NGO, criticized the government for failing to control the industry.

``This is not solving the economic polarization at all. Other developed countries limit gambling places’ areas and the age of entrance as well as put extra restrictions on them,’’ he continued, indicating that the gambling places have spread into residential areas in Korea.

The council asked for a clear explanation about the ``Pada Iyagi,’’ or ``Sea Story’’ scandal from the person responsible and also demanded that the government employ powerful steps needed to remove the stigma of the ``Gambling Republic.’’
