The Portland chapter of a fraternal organization has been fined thousands of dollars for illegal gambling, and law enforcement officials said they hope it sends a clear message to other clubs.
The Portland Eagles club must pay $80,000 and give up three video poker machines after pleading guilty to three counts of unlawful gambling.
In addition to the fines, the club also lost its gambling license for a year, and some of the club trustees could face charges, according to authorities.
Following an 18-month investigation, undercover detectives raided the club and seized three video poker machines, club records and a large amount of cash.
Video poker machines are legal in Maine, as long as the payout is not money, which investigators said is what had happened at the St. John Street club for years.
Cumberland County District Attorney Stephanie Anderson said, "We know from our investigation this kind of illegal activity was going on for years. We hope this prosecution and sentence will send a message to other clubs that are engaged in this illegal activity."
Anderson warned that the next club to be caught may not be so lucky and could face stiffer penalties, including loss of its liquor license. |
