TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Chances of passing a statewide smoking ban are in doubt after a Kansas Senate committee exempted bars and casinos from the bill.
The Senate Judiciary Committee plans to vote Monday on whether to send the bill to the full Senate.
Chairman John Vratil says that adding the exemptions won't help its chances in a committee where the vote is expected to be close.
The bill originally banned smoking in most public places and work places. Now the ban applies mainly to restaurants and work places.
Each county would vote November 4th on whether residents want to be part of the statewide ban.
In counties that opt out, city governments still could pass their own smoking bans.
