Competition to decide 'Old Lisboa' replacement

With Macau's once central gaming venue now languishing in the shadows of Sociedade de Jogos de Macau's (SJM) new Grand Lisboa, the company finally announced a redevelopment plan for the 'Old Lisboa' yesterday. The leading gaming concession holder, by market share, announced plans for an international architectural competition to select the design for a new iconic building to occupy the existing hotel and casino’s landmark site. The redevelopment project of the 17,500m² site is expected to commence in 2009 with and should be completed by 2012, a statement from the company said.“Since its opening in 1970, Hotel and Casino Lisboa has led in the development of Macau,” said Stanley Ho, Managing Director of SJM.“With this planned redevelopment we commit ourselves to further innovation and our ongoing role as a beneficial force in the development of Macau.”Ambrose So, director of SJM added, “As Macau’s gaming sector continues to develop we do not take our market leadership position for granted.”“SJM is taking this important step to ensure that its properties set the standard in gaming and entertainment in Macau. “To ensure that we have best-in-class design and construction, we will launch an international architectural design competition, inviting leading international firms to participate. “We are sure that the results will be something of which we and the people of Macau will be justly proud.” It is unclear if the company intends to completely demolish the existing building. In an interview last year, SJM's president of joint ventures and new business development, Frank McFadden said he would like to retain the heritage value of the existing building.
