THOMPSON: CASINOS ECONOMIC FORCE IN DELTA

Congressman Bennie Thompson said he's an advocate for gaming because he's watched it transform Tunica.

"I know what it can do for a community," he said.

Fifteen years ago Tunica was an economically depressed area, he said.

Thompson recalled paying $10 to be admitted to Splash, the first casino in the Tunica area 14 years ago. There are now nine casinos in Tunica.

Webster Franklin, president and CEO of the Tunica Convention and Visitors Bureau, said gaming has brought 16,000 jobs, 6,400 hotel rooms - there were 20 in 1992 - three golf courses and well-known entertainers.

Thompson said his district includes 23 casinos in Tunica, Lula, Greenville and Vicksburg.

He encouraged gaming industry members to continue to invest in their communities and to stay in touch with the state leaders so that they won't think about raising the gaming tax.

Thompson, a member of the Homeland Security Committee, suggested that casinos pay even closer attention to security because "terrorists are all over the place."
