SYRACUSE, N.Y. A New England casino owned by the Mohegan Tribe is a sponsor of the New York State Fair in Syracuse -- held virtually in the backyard of the casino-owning Oneida Indian Nation.
State officials say the Connecticut tribe -- which owns the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, 300 miles from Syracuse -- has paid 45-thousand dollars for the naming rights to the fair's Grandstand concert series and for other promotional considerations.
The Oneidas own the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, about 35 miles east of the fairgrounds in Syracuse. A spokesman for the tribe declined to comment on the Mohegans' fair sponsorship deal.
Mohegan Sun officials say getting exposure in central New York is part of the marketing plan for the casino the tribe is proposing for Pennsylvania's Poconos, about two hours from Syracuse.
The fair opens August 24th and runs through Labor Day. |
