FULTON COUNTY, GA -- One of the most persistent advocates of casino gambling in Georgia is Fulton County Commissioner Robb Pitts.
He believes the time is right to try to get the Legislature to put the measure before voters once and for all, while Mississippi begins to talk about rebuilding its casino industry, crippled by Hurricane Katrina.
Pitts says that 1.5 million Georgians per year go to casinos out of state. That’s money that he believes ought to be spent in the state.
Pitts is planning a large advertising campaign in magazines and newspapers to try to influence public opinion prior to the reconvening of the legislature in January. Pitts would like the public to help influence key legislators like House Speaker Glenn Richardson.
Richardson says he doesn’t believe that Georgia needs casino gambling. He opposes it, and believes that the people of Georgia also oppose it. Therefore he doesn’t think that it will come to a constitutional vote at the ballot box in 2006. |
