Better late then never for Song of the Best
Better late then never is the best description for Centennial Farms’ Song of the Best. The 5-year-old horse by Unbridled’s Song made his career debut in impressive fashion at Delaware Park on June 19. Ridden by Ramon Dominguez, the Kentucky-bred trained by Rodney Jenkins notched a 9 ¾-length over his eight rivals in a maiden event. He covered the six furlongs in 1:09.41. He will likely make his next outing in an allowance at Saratoga.

“He is about 17 hands and he just had some physical problems that kept him from running,” said trainer Rodney Jenkins. “I had him ready last year and he pulled high check ligament. I recommended that he be given more time and he will be fine. Sure enough he came back and he is doing well.”

The patience of the owners and the trainer looks like it is going to pay off.

“I was proud of the race the other day,” said Jenkins. “It was pretty good. The owners are great people and they never rush them. If it takes forever they hang in there.”

For his next start, Jenkins will likely wait and race Song of the Best at Saratoga.

“I think I am going to wait with him and go to Saratoga with him and run him in other than allowance,” he said.

Cat Criminal impressive again
In his third career start, Puglisi Stables and Steve Klesaris’ Cat Criminal notched another impressive performance while facing older horses and winners at Delaware Park on June 24. Ridden by Mario Pino, the 3-year-old son of Tale of the Cat notched a 1 ¼-length victory in a mile and one sixteenth allowance. The Kentucky-bred trained by Steve Klesaris covered the distance in 1:46.00 over a fast main track. Previously, he broke his maiden at Delaware Park by 10 ¾-lengths going a mile and one sixteenth. In his only other career outing, he ran fourth in a five and a half furlong maiden at Saratoga last year. After the maiden race at Saratoga it was discovered that Cat Criminal injured his hind ankle which forced his connections to give him time. However, since then he has steadily progressed and raised expectations. He will likely make his next outing in the mile and one sixteenth $300,000 Grade III Leonard Richards on Delaware Handicap Day, July 16, at Delaware Park.

“The colt ran well,” said trainer Steve Klesaris. “That was a lot left in the tank through the lane. Right now, we are pointing him toward the Leonard Richards. If all goes correctly over the next couple of weeks, that is the direction we are going to go. In his last race, he knew more about what was happening this time. He is still green and he is learning with each start. The Leonard Richards will be another step forward. The other day he faced older horses and obviously it was a better test than his maiden. His last race was no doubt a positive stepping stone to his next against straight 3-year-old stake winners.”
