DM SHICAGO POINTED TO SATURDAY’S MBNA TEXAS CHALLENGE

July 5, 2006 – Reigning world champion DM Shicago will make his next start in Saturday’s $115,650 MBNA America Texas Challenge (G1) at Sam Houston Race Park.

Racing for AQHA Executive Committee member Jim Helzer of Arlington, Texas, and his wife, Marilyn, DM Shicago recently ran seventh in the $150,000 Remington Park Invitational Championship on June 4. Winless in three starts this season, the 4-year-old gelding by champion Separatist will be seeking his first victory since September 4, when he captured the Grade 1 All American Derby at Ruidoso Downs.

On June 23, DM Shicago ran second to First Comment in the second of two MBNA America Texas Challenge trials.

“I think he gained a lot of confidence from his trial,” said trainer Heath Taylor. “First Comment is super, super sharp right now. I think we need to school him a little more in the gate. He seemed a little too anxious, but we think he’ll improve from here.”

In addition to First Comment, a Grade 1 winner and homebred racing for J.W. “Wes” Owens of Corpus Christi, Texas, DM Shicago’s nine opponents on Saturday will include This Snow Is Cold. A 5-year-old mare racing for Los Ladrilleros Horse Racing Co. and trained by Melinda Garcia, This Snow Is Cold has won four stakes, including the May 14 MBNA America Oklahoma Challenge (G1) at Remington Park.

“She came out of her trial really well,” said Garcia. “We’re looking forward to the race on Saturday and to running against so many good horses.”

The winner of the race will earn a berth in the November 11, $300,000 MBNA America Challenge Championship (G1) at Lone Star Park.

Four other Texas region Challenge races will be contested at Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday, including the $69,030 Bayer Legend Texas Derby Challenge (G3) and $26,010 John Deere Texas Distaff Challenge (G3). Post time for the track’s first race will be 6 p.m
