Dead infant found in Las Vegas casino trash

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Police are investigating the death of an infant found discarded in a trash heap inside The Mirage hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip, authorities said Wednesday.

The child, who appeared to been have carried to full-term, was discovered by hotel workers as they sorted garbage at the hotel's waste facility Tuesday afternoon, Las Vegas police said.

Investigators said the child's umbilical cord was still partially attached, though roughly cut. There were no obvious signs of trauma and the infant, found amid trash on a conveyer belt, appeared to have been dead for several days.

"It went through a birth, the question is whether it was alive or whether it was stillborn," Las Vegas police homicide Lt. Lewis Roberts said. "But I don't think (the mother) went to a hospital."

Autopsy results had not been released Wednesday.

Police said they were called to the garbage facility located in the back of the 3,000-room resort at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. The area, consisting of several chutes and conveyers leading to a larger garbage bin, is out-of-view and off-limits for hotel guests and casino patrons.

MGM Mirage spokesman Gordon Absher would not comment on the details of the case, but said the company was cooperating with police in the investigation.

Roberts said police were tracking down some "good leads" and were "leaning toward possibly someone who was staying at the hotel as opposed to someone who worked there."

He said homicide detectives were working with the department's child abuse and neglect investigators, who would handle the case if the infant was determined to have been stillborn.

OMG! You know, I love Vegas and in the same breath, I can say I hate it. It can be such a great town, but then there is this sleazy undercurrent about it. The business cards littering the streets of the naked escorts, dead babies found in the garbage, the toddler who put the condom in her mouth.

I dunno, I love to visit Vegas, but after about three days, it gets to be like fish - it starts to stink :-(
