Delaware North officials tour Aqueduct, Belmont Park

Officials from Buffalo, New York-based Delaware North Co. toured Aqueduct and Belmont Park this week as the company continues to show interest in bidding on New York's three major racetracks.

Prospective bidders will tour Saratoga Race Course Thursday and must indicate by Friday if they plan on seeking the franchise now held by New York Racing Association, which expires at the end of next year.

"It's part of the process of conducting a thorough evaluation and making a determination of whether we'll be bidding," Delaware North spokesperson Wendy Watkins said of the racetrack tours. "It's a very exciting opportunity. As of right now, we are very interested and will continue to follow the process."

Officials from Magna Entertainment Inc., North America's largest racetrack operator, and New York-based Empire Racing Associates also toured Aqueduct and Belmont on Monday and Tuesday.

"We know Saratoga like the back of our hands, but we'll participate because it's part of the process," said Jeff Perlee, Empire Racing's executive director.

Magna officials have declined comment since the state's request for proposals was issued on June 13.

Delaware North owns Finger Lakes Racetrack & Gaming Center in central New York, and manages video lottery operations at Standardbred tracks Saratoga Gaming and Raceway and Fairgrounds (Buffalo) Gaming & Raceway.

Earlier this week, NYRA said it would provide its simulcast signal to the adjacent Saratoga Gaming and Raceway for the first time during this year's Saratoga meet. This raised speculation that the two venues might somehow partner in the state's RFP process. But Watkins said Delaware North has not committed to any such business alliances.

Empire Racing is comprised mainly of New York thoroughbred horsemen and breeders, and has said it would only partner with a New York state firm. Perlee declined comment when asked if Empire and Delaware North are collaborating.

"We'll wait and see on that," he said. "They [Delaware North] took the tour independently."
