Over $4 Million Up For Grabs During The Upcoming Season
DELTA DOWNS MAKES HISTORY WITH 2006-2007 THOROUGHBRED STAKES SCHEDULE
- OVER $4 MILLION WILL BE UP FOR GRABS THIS SEASON -
VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel is preparing for one of its most important Thoroughbred seasons ever. The 88-day stand will take place between Nov. 1, 2006 and March 31, 2007.
The upcoming meeting will mark the first live Thoroughbred action at Delta Downs in nearly 19 months. The track’s 2005-2006 season did not take place in Vinton, La. due to damage sustained from Hurricane Rita, which struck the Gulf Coast on Sept. 24, 2005. A portion of Delta Downs’ live race dates were transferred to Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La. last year.
Highlighting this year’s meeting at Delta Downs will be a 39-race stakes schedule worth a staggering $4,075,000. The richest offering will take place on Friday, Dec. 1 when the track conducts its first graded stakes race for Thoroughbreds, Boyd Gaming’s $1 Million Delta Jackpot (Gr. 3). The Jackpot is for 2-year-olds going 1-1/16 miles.
The Jackpot received graded status after three previous runnings, which included performances by stars like Outta Here, Mr. Jester, Fire Slam, Texcess and Closing Argument. The latter went on to finish second in the 2005 Kentucky Derby after a runner-up effort at Delta Downs in the Jackpot five months earlier.
Delta Jackpot Night will also feature four other important stakes races including the $50,000 Zydeco, the $100,000 Sam’s Town, the $100,000 Treasure Chest, and Boyd Gaming’s $300,000 Delta Princess Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. The Princess purse was raised to its currently level this year after being offered for $250,000 during its first three editions dating back to 2002.
Friday, Nov. 3 will also be and important date on the calendar as the track offers a quartet of added-money events worth total purse money of $350,000. The evening of action is tabbed as Delta Jackpot Preview Night with the $150,000 Jean Lafitte Stakes serving as the richest stepping stone to this year’s marquee race just one month later.
State-bred horses will get their chance to shine on Saturday, Feb. 3 when Delta Downs hosts the fourth running of Louisiana Premier Night. The exciting event includes 10 stakes races for Louisiana-bred runners with total purse money of $1 million on the line. The richest race on the program will be the $200,000 Louisiana Premier Night Championship for older horses traveling 1-1/16 miles.
