Disputed truck stop casino wants liquor license

A truck stop casino that drew widespread opposition from residents around North Market Street in Shreveport in 2005 is seeking a liquor license.

Zoning Board of Appeals members approved a special use permit for the casino operation for Market Street Truck Plaza in October 2005 despite petitions against the casino. About 1,300 people signed the petitions. The property already bears zoning that allows a truck stop to operate.

Shreveport City Council members upheld the decision, despite an appeal from people opposing the casino and truck stop. Some opponents were more concerned about increased traffic on the busy North Market corridor than gambling.

Through Friday, Shreveport zoning officials had received no letters or calls from people opposing the liquor application.

Reginald Wright, a spokesman for the Cherokee Highland Park Neighborhood Association, said he dropped his opposition after he saw where the truck stop would be. He said he was concerned in 2005 about it being near the homes, which sit off North Hearne Avenue northeast of North Market Street, and noted that he’s filled up at the gas pumps on the site.

“That’s not surprising,” Wright said of the liquor application. “(Gambling and liquor) kind of go together.”
