The drive to get the downtown casino issue on the ballot has hit another snag.
After getting the go ahead from the state attorney general's office to begin gathering signatures to put the casino proposal to a vote, Queen City Gaming says that all of the votes that they collect could now be ruled invalid in a court of law.
A competing group called Ohio learn and earn is also gathering signatures to put a similar petition on the November ballot.
Queen City Gaming said that it cannot gather the 500,000 signatures needed in eight weeks alone and looked to a private firm for help. They say that Ohio Learn and Earn has hired the private companies that could perform the task of gathering the required signatures in eight weeks leaving Queen City Gaming left to gather signatures on their own.
Cull cites House Bill 3, which was recently introduced and passed, as the law that could render all of the signatures that Queen City Gaming collects by a private firm invalid. "For a variety of reasons, we have been conflicted out of using a professional signature collection firm that is necessary for a task of the magnitude," said Cull in a release on Thursday.
Cincinnati City Council member Laketa Cole said that she was disappointed in the latest developments, "There's always gonna be challenges, we gotta continue to press on."
Councilwoman Leslie Ghiz has taken a harsher stance against the Learn and Earn movement. She issued a release today urging Cincinnati residents to not sign the Earn and Learn petitions. Ghiz said she supports gambling in Ohio but only if Cincinnati is included in that inititative.
Learn and Earn spokesperson Linda Siefkas hopes that southwest Ohio will see the benefits of the Learn and Earn proposal which Siefkas said will bring $23 million into Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Cleveland, if the Learn and Earn proposal passes, will have permission to build two casinos in the 7-2 proposal. Cleveland stands to get $70 million in gambling money.
The group will examine their options and consider their next step over the weekend.
