RALEIGH, N.C. - Gov. Mike Easley named utility executive John McArthur chairman of the state lottery commission Wednesday, a day after Charles Sanders left the job.
McArthur, a Progress Energy executive, former senior adviser to Easley and his chief counsel while attorney general, will oversee a lottery that began amid controversy but has generated more than $400 million in ticket sales since March.
McArthur, who could not immediately be reached for comment, was one of five members originally appointed by Easley to the nine-member commission.
Easley appointed Sanders in September 2005 to a one-year term that expired Aug. 31. In a message released Tuesday by the North Carolina Education Lottery, Sanders said he told Easley at the time of his appointment that he planned only to serve on the commission for a year.
Easley also announced Wednesday that he had reappointed Crime Control and Public Safety Secretary Bryan Beatty to the commission. Beatty and McArthur's original one-year terms expired at the end of last month.
In McArthur, Easley finds a longtime ally who directed the governor's transition team after his 2000 gubernatorial election victory. He left the administration at the end of 2001 to go to Progress Energy, where he is now a senior vice president of corporate relations, general counsel and corporate secretary.
Beatty serves on the commission to meet a state lottery law requirement that one member must have at least five years of law enforcement experience.
Easley still must fill one vacancy on the commission.
