FORT SMITH, Ark. -- A group working to promote economic growth in downtown Fort Smith has endorsed a development that could include a casino.

Officials with the Central Business Improvement District said that they are endorsing the entire project, not just the casino.

The development is being planned for the riverfront, officials said. It could also include an upscale outlet mall, an IMAX movie theater and even an arena for a semi-pro hockey team.

However, officials said all of the ideas being pitched hinge on the approval of the casino.

While some Fort Smith directors said they would support the development, the city has not taken an official stance.

Arkansas keeps playing around with this casino thing - I just don't understand it. They have at least one horse track and one dog track that I know of in the state, but they don't want casino gambling or a lottery? Hello? What do they think betting on horses and dogs is? I guess they prefer for their residents to go to surrounding states for lottery and casinos instead of keeping some of that money themselves. What a backwards state!

no kidding sounds like there following oklahoma to much... Oklahoma finally figure out wow we have no money for our children lets finally open up a lottery. lot of the poblems are the southern baptist bible thumbers. they preach one way and do another....
