Lottery news from http://www.kfoxtv.com/

People all across the country have become targets of foreign lottery schemes, including at least one El Paso couple.

David and Rebecca Castanon received a check in the mail for nearly $3,000 announcing Rebecca the winner of the Irish Random Lotto.

David Castanon said, "We don't buy lottery tickets ourselves, so I don't know where this drawing came from. I don't know, maybe a drawing someone entered us in."

The Castanons said they took the check to Chase Bank to cash, and the teller would have given them the money. After showing the bank the letter that accompanied the check, it became obvious that the operation was fraudulent.

With this particular scheme, a letter is sent to someone announcing them as the winner of a foreign lottery. It includes a check to help pay fees associated with claiming the cash. It instructs recipients to deposit the check and immediately send the money to the lottery company to get the rest of the winnings. What recipients don't know is that the check will bounce, and the bank will ask them to return the money.

Officials with the bureau told KFOX there's no reason a company should ask anyone to wire money for associated costs. Melanie Aguilar with the BB said, "As soon as that bounces, it hits back to your bank. So you're minus that, plus what you already spent."
