TOPEKA, Kansas -- As reported by the Hutchinson News: "A Las Vegas company can't compete for the right to build and manage a state-owned resort casino in the Dodge City area.

"The five-member Kansas Lottery Commission on Monday unanimously rejected a request from Epic Gaming to accept its late application for a $65 million complex in southeast Dodge City. That left two applicants - Dodge City Resort and Gaming Co. and Butler National Service Corp. - who beat the Dec. 26 deadline.

"...Doug Lawrence, an Epic consultant, reminded the commission that it had extended deadlines for accepting applications in three other gambling zones created by the Legislature last year.

"...John Groom, Epic chief executive officer, said he wouldn't challenge the commission's decision.

"...Attorney Stephen Joseph, representing Dodge City Resort and Gaming, said, 'The whole concept of setting a deadline is that it gives everybody a level playing field and that's it.'..."
