Erie casino opening set for Feb. 28
The Associated Press
ERIE, Pa. -- Presque Isle Downs racetrack is expected to open the state's fourth slot-machine casino on Feb. 28.
The opening had been scheduled for Thursday, but was delayed because of a recently filled vacancy on the state Gaming Control Board and a pending lawsuit, which was thrown out last week by the state Supreme Court.
The board announced Friday that its new appointee, former Bucknell University president Gary Sojka, had cleared a mandatory background check and would be eligible to vote when he is sworn in Feb. 27. The casino's opening date must be approved by the board.
The casino is expected to hold two invitation-only test days of gambling before the opening. All house proceeds will benefit the United Way of Erie County.
