HALLANDALE BEACH -- Las Vegas-style slot machines made their public debut this morning in Broward County, unveiled to much fanfare outside Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino.
Gulfstream Park received its first truckload of slots Friday, unloading the machines before a crowd of media, track employees and two showgirls, who had been hired for the event. The track anticipated more than 400 slots arriving by the end of the day.
Gulfstream Park is the first of Broward County's four pari-mutuels to receive the machines and will likely be the first to open its slots room. The racetrack casino is anticipating opening in mid-November, but hasn't publicly announced any target date.
The slot machines are the first of 6,000 slots. Trucks will start unloading machines on Monday at Mardi Gras Racetrack & Gaming Center in Hallandale Beach, formerly known as Hollywood Greyhound Track.
Pompano Park Harness Track and Dania Jai-Alai are in the middle of the licensing process.
In March 2005, county voters approved the gambling sites getting the machines.
