Just a few months ago, it appeared that Atlantic City's burgeoning summer beach bar scene was going to be washed out to sea by tough new regulations from the state's Department of Environmental Protection.

But the casinos and the state reached a compromise over how close to the water the bars could be built. That cleared the way for four beach bars to set up shop on the sand this summer, three fewer than last year.

The biggest is Trump Plaza's Beach Bar, which jump-started the season on Memorial Day weekend by presenting a four-song concert by the Beach Boys. With bar and table seating, plus some standing room, the beach bar can accommodate more than 1,000 people.

In addition to a full-service bar featuring tropical and specialty drinks, the beach bar offers a kitchen (with counter seating at the food-service area). Menu items range from traditional beach foods like hot dogs, hamburgers and fries to a raw bar (clams and oysters), sushi, salads, pizza and other munchies.

The temporary facility, which is dismantled after Labor Day and reinstalled the following May, evokes a tropical feeling with thatched huts and dozens of live palm trees (which are destined to become dead palm trees after fall's first cold snap).
