Gambling Prevention and Treatment Needed For Hawaiian Addict
August 26, 2006
Gambling addiction in Hawaii is common just like any other state, but analysts say the problem is even worse there because of the widespread acceptance of casino gambling in Hawaiian culture and because laws are rarely enforced.
Despite spending millions of dollars annually on drug and alcohol prevention and treatment, the state of Hawaii has yet to create a single program dedicated to helping problem gamblers.
According to the State Health Director, "I think the lines of personal responsibility and government control, although not always clear, in this instance are more heavily weighted toward personal responsibililty".
If you're living in Hawaii and unable to get treatment for gambling addiction, please contact the local chapter of Gamblers Anonymous and begin attending the Tuesday night meetings. Last we heard, the meetings were taking place in Oahu. Make sure to double check their website at www.gamblersanonymous.org.
