Conecuh County man was arrested Monday on gambling charges after officers seized five slot machines at a store he owns along Interstate 65, Conecuh County District Attorney Tommy Chapman said.

Chapman said that agents from his office, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms raided the BP station on Wednesday, but were unable to locate owner Keith Fleming, 31, of Evergreen until Monday when authorities made the arrest.

Fleming's station lies on County Road 32, about 5 miles north of Evergreen at exit 101.

Fleming was charged with five counts of possession of a gambling device and one count of promoting gambling. He was released on $15,000 bond.

Fleming told the Press-Register that he questioned why he was singled out when there are "about 50 or 60 machines" all over the county.

"I will be curious to see who else gets arrested, and I wonder why only my machines got taken," Fleming said.

"Officers seized five slot machines after thorough undercover investigation," Chapman said. "Officers observed the machines paying out cash prizes to patrons."

Chapman said he had issued "repeated warnings over recent months" to business owners who were operating illegal gaming machines.

He said he hopes the arrest will send a message to others operating gambling machines.
