GOLDEN GATE FIELDS TO BEGIN WORK ON SYNTHETIC RACING SURFACE JULY 23

GOLDEN GATE FIELDS TO BEGIN WORK
ON SYNTHETIC RACING SURFACE JULY 23
ALBANY -- Golden Gate Fields will begin construction on its new synthetic racing surface on Monday, July 23, and plans to have the installation of the Tapeta surface completed by Monday, October 15.

Golden Gate Fields will open its 2007 winter meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 7.

Tapeta, manufactured by Tapeta Footings of Maryland, is an artificial surface designed for safety, performance and consistency in all weather conditions. The artificial track is made up of wax-coated synthetic materials and features a vertical drainage system that allows water to pour through the surface rather than off to the side.

Golden Gate Fields is the first track in Northern California to install a synthetic surface.

“We are very excited about getting this project started,” said Robert Hartman, general manager of Golden Gate Fields. “Magna Entertainment, owner of Golden Gate Fields, is proud to make this $9 million investment in the future of Northern California racing. We will be preserving the long tradition of thoroughbred racing for our fans, horsemen, employees and local community.”

In 2006, the California Horse Racing Board mandated that all five of California’s major thoroughbred tracks install synthetic surfaces, which are proven to be safer for horses and riders, by Jan. 31, 2007. Earlier this month, however, the CHRB granted Bay Meadows, which is scheduled for future development, a one-year exemption from installing a synthetic surface.

Horses stabled at Golden Gate Fields will be transferred to the barn areas at Bay Meadows, Pleasanton and Vallejo. Golden Gate Fields will reopen its barn area on Friday, Oct. 12, and horses will be able to begin training on the new racing surface on Monday, Oct. 15.
