The Chief Minister, Mr Pratapsingh Rane has said that his government is not keen on having a large number of floating casinos in the state; even as he expressed doubts whether all those who have sought permission would actually start the business.
Mr Rane said this while addressing reporters after cabinet meeting. He expressed ignorance about any advertisement being issued calling for applications for grant of permission to start floating casino business.
He further said that only two casinos were operational as of now and expressed doubts about all those who have applied and paid processing fees of Rs 10 lakh each would start the business, adding that according to him two or three of them may start functioning.
Mr Rane also said that besides paying processing fees, the applicants would also have to invest in purchase of boats as well as paying of annual fee of Rs 1 crore to the government, which may not be a financially viable proposition.
Saying that there have been no security problems as off now, the Chief Minister went on to add that the government and police were capable of taking care of the security. He also said that no new licences have been granted.
The Chief Secretary, Mr J P Singh, who was also present at the briefing, said that the advertisement was issued for public intimation.
Mr Rane also said that Star Cruise was selected after calling for global expression of interest in setting up of a ship terminal off Aguada bay. He said that though National Institute of Oceanography has given its report, Star Cruise has not come up with environment impact assessment or feasibility study report.
The company has also not submitted its business plan yet, said the Chief Minister, adding that government has appointed Mulla and Mulla as legal consultants besides engaging a financial consultant to study the proposals.
Later Mr Singh told reporters that Goa could be a gateway to the South and that the terminal could be used by other cruise operators. He said that if the Star Cruise goes ahead with the deal then the government may grant it 30 year concession.
