BILOXI, Miss. - Hard Rock Casino has asked the city of Biloxi to approve a change in its rebuilding plan that calls for elevating its casino above sea level.
The resort's gambling barge was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina the week before it was to open.
Hard Rock now wants to fill in the site where the barge was moored, using that space for valet parking and putting a casino on concrete pilings overhead. There will also be three restaurants, a bakery, a bar and a lounge.
The new elevated area at the Hard Rock will include a 48,400-square-foot gambling floor. A further 3,000 square feet of gambling space will be added by enclosing a balcony.
There will be no major additions or alterations to the 318-room hotel.
Premier Entertainment, the casino's parent company, has set a goal of opening the Hard Rock Biloxi next summer.
Two weeks ago the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in an effort to shake loose its insurance settlements from bondholders. The casino company already has sued the trustee bank for its bondholders and offered to buy back the debt.
The casino has $160 million in insurance settlements, but its bondholders have refused to release the money. Roy Anderson Corp., whose owner also has an ownership stake in the casino, is doing construction work at the property.
