Sonny Turner of the Platters
In late 1959, Sonny Turner replaced Tony Williams as the lead singer of the original Platters. Sonny brought The Platters back to the pop charts in the 1960's with such hits as "I love you 1000 Times", "With this Ring" and "Washed Ashore"; as well as re-recording major Platter hits like "Only You", "The Great Pretender" and "The Magic Touch."
You can hear Sonny's voice in various movies such as "The Nutty Professor II", "Hearts in Atlantis" and "Prince of the City" . Sonny remained with The Platters from late 1959 until 1970 when he left to pursue a solo career. In 2005, Mr. Turner received The Lifetime Excellence in Entertainment Award here in Las Vegas where he currently resides. He was also inducted into The Vocal Group Hall Of Fame for his achievements with The Platters. Today Sonny performs all over the world.
Charlie Thomas' Drifters
Today's group includes the following: Charlie Thomas, who has been in show business for fifty years; joined the the Drifters in 1958. Jerone Manning who Charlie found in a local club in York, Pa. singing Drifters songs. Steven Brown from York, Pa. Brown sang with Sunburst before joining the Drifters and Louis Bailey also from York, Pa.
The group today tours throughout the world as "Charlie Thomas' Drifters" performing their hits, such as."There Goes My Baby," "Save the Last Dance for Me," "Spanish Harlem" ,"Stand By Me and the classic best seller "Under the Boardwalk." In 1988 The Drifters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Carl Gardner's COASTERS
THE COASTERS first hit the charts with a double-sided smash "YOUNG BLOOD" the "A" side and "SEARCHING" the "B" side. Both sold a million copies. This put THE COASTERS on the road. In 1958 THE COASTERS again had two block-buster hits, "YAKETY YAK" and "CHARLIE BROWN". From then on it was hit after hit with such songs as "POISON IVY", "ALONG CAME JONES", "LITTLE EGYPT", "RUN RED RUN", "LOVE POTION #9" and many, many more.
The present line-up of THE COASTERS consists of Carl Gardner, lead tenor, Jimmy Norman, second tenor, Ronnie Bright, Bass and Thomas (Curly) Palmer, musical Director and arranger have been together for over 28 years.
On January 21, 1987 THE COASTERS (Carl Gardner, Billy Guy, Will Jones and Cornell Gunter) were inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
