Harrah's Casino hosts annual Senior Celebration

CHEROKEE – Close to 700 senior citizens from the seven counties of Western North Carolina gathered at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Hotel Friday for a day of fun, games and prizes, entertainment, food and fellowship. The annual Senior Celebration is sponsored by Harrah’s Cherokee Casino & Hotel.

As a Senior Celebration sponsor, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino & Hotel provides the hotel ballroom for the annual celebration and $15,000 to cover the cost of meals, decorations and other incidentals.

“We are so proud to have a ballroom in our hotel large enough to accommodate such a large group of special guests,” said Community Relations and Communications Director Joyce Dugan. “And we’re thrilled that the number of seniors participating has grown from about 200 just four years ago.”

Tsali Manor Senior Citizens Center Director Deb West of Cherokee said Harrah’s Cherokee has made a big difference by sponsoring Senior Celebration. This event is usually put together on a shoe-string budget. Harrah’s Cherokee has made it possible for many to participate who may have been prohibited in the past due to financial shortfalls.

In keeping with this year’s “Academy Awards Cherokee-style” theme, many seniors came dressed in their “Hollywood-best,” including look-alikes for stars like Minnie Pearle, Cher and Hoss Cartwright. In keeping with the theme, staff members assisting at the “Red Carpet Affair” wore tuxedo t-shirts.

Outside of the ballroom, seniors took part in a health and information fair. Senior advocacy groups and other organizations set up health and program information booths. Seniors were given information about hearing, dental and vision checks, diabetes, low-impact exercise and nutrition.

The annual celebration began in Cherokee 17 years ago and has grown steadily in popularity since then. Senior Citizens Centers from the seven counties of WNC participate in the event, with staff members from Tsali Manor Center and Harrah’s Cherokee collaborating on planning, preparing and executing the event.
