Soon the hits started to pile up: "1959" and "Chicken Truck" became his first country Top Tens and "I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I'm Gonna Be a Diamond Someday)" went Top Five later that year. "Wild and Blue" was Anderson's first chart-topper. But it was "Swingin'" that became his first signature hit. The smash single, which he co-wrote, won a CMA award, and Anderson won the CMA Horizon Award. The single "Straight Tequila Night" was released in 1991 and it shot to No. 1, setting the stage for five more years of hits, including "When It Comes to You," "Seminole Wind" and the No. 1 "Money in the Bank." Five For Fighting has one main member, John Ondrasik, who considers himself mainly a singer and songwriter, though also competent as a guitarist and pianist. Ondrasik, using the stage name Five for Fighting, released his debut album, Message for Albert, in 1997. Five for Fighting followed it with America Town a few years later. The album might have been simply another strong outing from a talented singer/songwriter, were it not for the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, and the nation's embrace of Ondrasik's delicate piano ballad "Superman (It's Not Easy)." Five for Fighting performed the song at the Concert for New York City that winter, and America Town went platinum. When The Battle for Everything appeared in early 2004, it was Five for Fighting's most stylistically ambitious and lyrically bold recording to date.
