Harrah's exec has big plans for Coast tourism

BILOXI, Miss. --
Harrah's Entertainment is expected to announce Tuesday plans to expand onto the Biloxi beach front, said Mayor A.J. Holloway.
Harrah's board vice chairman Charles Atwood, a Pascagoula native, said the company has worked hard to get to this point.
"We're bringing a lot of our friends and partners with us to create something that's more than a casino and more than's ever been there before," Atwood said.
Harrah's, the largest casino company in the world, owns the Grand Casino Biloxi.
At last week's Southern Gaming Summit, Holloway said the company has acquired the largest footprint of any resort in east Biloxi, "about 80 acres in all," since Hurricane Katrina.
"We have accumulated a fabulous site there on the beach and around the property and we get to build a really compelling building, but one that will also be great for the community. A place where everyone feels comfortable going and there's something there for everyone to do," he said.
Atwood thinks it is important to get the "tourism engine running" on the Coast.
"I think people visit places where the people who live there are nice to them. The hospitality of the people who live on the Gulf Coast is unmatched anywhere," he said. |
