Heavy fog in parts of China's southern coast has been said to be the main cause for the collision of two hydrofoils ferrying passengers between the Chinese territories of Hong Kong and Macau last Friday, seriously injuring 19 people. The incident occurred close to Macau where the injured are being treated.

Parts of China's southern coast were enveloped in fog due to a warm and humid maritime air stream, with thick fog covering China's commercial centre, Shanghai.

The passengers injured in the collision suffered mostly wounds to the head and bone fractures, which spokesman for the government of Macau, Alex Che, described as non-threatening. Another 114 passengers suffered lighter injuries said Che.

Wong Soi Man, director of Macau's Maritime Administration, said the accident's cause had not yet been determined, but commented that "heavy fog must be one of the key factors."
Another three incidents occurred due to the fog; with one unlicensed river ferry capsizing in Shanghai, one ferry running aground near Macau and another ferry hitting a small fishing vessel travelling from Hong Kong to Macau. Ten people were left missing after the ferry capsized in Shanghai, and no passengers were injured from the other two incidents.

Ferry operator Turbojet has since cut back its services to Macau due to the weather, departing once every half hour instead of its usual frequency of every five minutes. Turbojet’s travel time has also been increased, adding an additional half an hour to the one-hour journey.

A key route to Macau’s popular casino spots was also disrupted due to the fog, with its traffic being slowed down.
