THE GRAND Boulevard Hotel on Thursday said it has terminated its contract of lease with the Casino Filipino and would convert the space occupied by the casino area into a grand ballroom.
“Soon, the hotel will be able to open its doors to more than 1,000 guests,” the hotel management said in a statement, adding that architectural plans for the ballroom have been finalized.
The lease contract would be terminated July 31 but the hotel said that the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor), the casino’s owner, refused to cooperate in the appraisal of the restoration work to be done in the leased premises and to pay the restoration costs on or before it vacates the space.
Grand Boulevard has asked a court to appoint an appraiser to calculate the charges to be collected from Pagcor, although the hotel estimated the costs at 170 million pesos. The hotel is also collecting an electric bill differential from the government agency.
“These are both obligations of Pagcor under the contract of lease,” the hotel added.
The Grand Boulevard Casino Filipino gained notoriety in 1999 with the disappearance of casino security staff Edgardo Bentain, who was allegedly the source of a video footage showing then Vice President Joseph Estrada playing baccarat inside in 1996. Bentain was never found.
The hotel is located along Roxas Boulevard and affords its guests a scenic view of Manila Bay’s famous sunset.
