Houston woman warns about job offer at Mississippi casino
Says she drove a long way for nothing

By Stephanie Guadian
(2/12/07 - TUNICA, MISSISSIPPI) - A local woman looking for a job found heartache instead. She responded to an ad in a local paper and drove all the way to Mississippi only to find out the job wasn't what she expected.

Erma Ramos has a warning for jobseekers. If you get an offer, get it in writing. Last week she learned that first hand.

"There was a job in Mississippi for $8 an hour, 40 hours per week," she said.

There was also a promised place to stay at a reduced rate. So she and three other women, who also answered the ad, packed their bags and drove from Houston to Tunica. But their first day on the job, turned out to be their last.

Once at the location, the three women say they were told, "Girl they are just fooling you. Why are you coming out here? Why did you leave Houston? You will barely be working three hours a day. A lot of people have been coming from Houston and they are going through the same thing you are going through."

Ramos says she only worked three hours the first day and couldn't get confirmation she would be working at all the next day.

"The apartment was filthy," Ramos said. "There was only one bed, so we slept on the floor very itchy you know."

The company, Innovative Hospitality Systems, did not want to talk to us on camera, but said over the phone they simply provide employees for the casino and never made any promises about the number of hours Ramos would work. We also contacted Hollywood Casino and they had no comment this afternoon, but did say they will look into the allegations. As for Ramos, she's still looking for a job with a little more caution.

"I just want to let the people know it is nothing but lies," she warned. "Don't make that mistake. I made that mistake. It won't happen again. It sounded too good to be true."
