The chief of the Narragansett Indian Tribe says today's decision by the Rhode Island Supreme Court is a victory for Indians.
The court's decision will allow Rhode Islanders to vote on a constitutional amendment that would permit the Narragansett Indian Tribe to build a casino in West Warwick.
Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas says most Narragansett Indians make less than 15-thousand dollars per year.
He says casino revenue could help the tribe take care of its elderly and give Indians
greater access to education when the tribe's federal funding is being cut.
The tribe released a summary of its contract with Las Vegas-based Harrah's Entertainment that says it will get five percent of the casino's profits after taxes are paid.
It has not released the entire contract.
