Indiana county debates over casino taxes

INDIANA – As reported by the Louisville Courier-Journal: "Crawford County leaders pleaded with the Harrison County Council last night not to reduce the more than $1.5 million a year in revenue from casino taxes that Harrison sends them.

"The issue arose as the council prepared to renew its annual agreements for sharing riverboat tax money with its neighbors.

"Crawford County, one of the state's poorest, has received roughly $13 million since the Caesars casino opened in late 1998.

"…Under the current revenue-sharing plan, Harrison sends 18 percent of the county's $22 million in revenues from casino admissions and wagering taxes to three neighboring counties, the city of New Albany and 10 incorporated Harrison towns.

"…At the council meeting, a Crawford contingent -- it included two lawyers for the county, Commissioner Larry Bye, Councilman Jerry Brewer and school Superintendent Mark Eastridge -- thanked Harrison officials for their generosity and spoke of school improvements and other benefits from the revenue sharing…"
