Injured Texas jockey Gray dies
Jockey Akili Gray, who competed at all of the major Texas Thoroughbred tracks until suffering serious injuries in a racing accident last year, died on April 15.
Gray suffered brain injuries when his mount, Tenacious Tigress, clipped heels with a rival in a maiden race on July 2, 2005, at the Gillespie County Fairgrounds in Fredericksburg, Texas. Gray was thrown to the ground.
Gray, who competed at Lone Star Park, Retama Park, and Sam Houston Race Park as well as tracks throughout the Southwest, was 30.
On an Internet memorial site, Gray's brother, Arthur Gray III, said Akili enjoyed riding Thoroughbreds. He won 16 races from 690 mounts from 2001-'05. He also rode Quarter Horses.
"I know that my brother died doing what he loved to do," Arthur Gray said. "My father used to work with horses and train horses so he grew into it. My father's passion was horses so [Akili's] passion was horses." |
